چکیده

Uranium photoionization was observed in the afterglow of pulsed hollow cathode lamps illuminated by a dye laser tuned near the electronic transition around 591.5 nm ~L6 216 900 cm M 7!. The photoionization signal was used to monitor the time evolution of the ground state uranium vapor density in the cathode hole. Lifetimes over 1 ms were measured for the uranium vapor; that makes this device attractive for multistep photoionization spectroscopy. The obtained results lead to the conclusion that these long times are due to cluster formation in the afterglow. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S0034-6748~98!04302-0#

TWO PHOTON TRANSITIONS IN THE OPTOGALVANIC SPECTRUM OF NEON

Seventeen two-photon transitions for neon have been observed in the 580- 635 nm spectral region for use in the spectroscopic study of its higher excited levels, which are not accessible by one-photon absorption. To compare the two and one-photon absorption signals originating from the same lower level, an effort was made to record single-photon optogalvanic spectrum in the available wavele...

First results on Ge resonant laser photoionization in hollow cathode lamp.

In the framework of the research and development activities of the SPES project regarding the optimization of the radioactive beam production, a dedicated experimental study has been recently started in order to investigate the possibility of in-source ionization of germanium using a set of tunable dye lasers. Germanium is one of the beams to be accelerated by the SPES ISOL facility, which is u...

Measurement of oxygen atom density employing vacuum ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy with microdischarge hollow cathode lamp

The compact measurement system for absolute density of oxygen ~O! atom has been developed, which employs a vacuum ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy ~VUVAS! technique with a high-pressure microdischarge hollow cathode lamp ~MHCL! as a light source. The influences of self-absorption, emission line profile of the MHCL, and background absorption of oxygen molecule (O2) on the determination of abs...

Recombination Lasers in a Flowing Negative Glow Discharge

A fast gas flow through a negative glow plasma creates an afterglow region where supercooled electrons are separated from energetic beam electrons to produce a population inversion by collisional recombination. We report spatially-resolved electron temperature measurements of the afterglow plasma showing electron temperatures in the range of 750-1100 K under steady-state conditions. A 4 em long...

Features and Operation of Hollow Cathode Lamps and Deuterium Lamps

This paper discusses the parameters which influence the operation of hollow cathode and deuterium lamps. Examples are given of how parameters can be selected in order to improve the quality of analytical results. Aspects of deuterium lamp operation for background correction are also covered.
